Aim

We will equip you with the skills required for confident and competent mountain walking in the UK mountains under summer conditions.

Course Content

Main topics are:

  • Navigation skills including the use in map, compass and electronic devices

  • Informed decision making in producing practical and achievable route plans

  • Understanding of mountain weather

  • Dealing with an emergency and understanding the role of mountain rescue

  • Planning to avoid water hazards and how to deal with them on the hill

  • What clothing & equipment to take and how to use it.

Pre-requisites

Over 18’s with a few days experience in the UK mountains. To enjoy the course fully, and to ensure you get the best experience we suggest all participants have a level of fitness and robustness.

Location, timings & logistics

Courses normally start at 09.00 and finish at 16.00. Exceptions to this will be agreed with you in advance. 

The course meeting location is usually our HQ in Kendal. Exceptions to this will be agreed with you in advance. 

The course is flexible taking into account individual and group needs and prevailing weather conditions.
